German Translation Progress Report

Postby Kinta » Sun Jan 04, 2009 11:34 am

I'm not sure this is the best category for this subject but perhaps Elder can make this one an announcement. :D

As some of you already know I'm currently working on a german translation of Eternal Eden.
Elder suggested that some of you might be interested in my progress so far and that's exactly what I will be posting in this topic.

Please keep in mind that this first progress report will be much bigger than the future ones because I've been working on this for almost three weeks. I will write this report like some kind of a diary.
Okay, let's start!

Progress report #1:

  • I finished translating the intro. It took me much longer than I anticipated. It's not perfect yet and I'll have to test it more but I guess it's 98% completed.
Fortunately the translating got much faster after that. I started to translate from the top of the project, the houses first. I stopped after Dogan's house now. The translating proceeds very smoothly and I didn't encounter any big problems (i love my internet dictionary!).
  • I started to translate the database and it's nearly finished. Only the descriptions of the skills are missing.
I continued my translation of the events. Right now I'm translating the maps of the princess' home.
  • I finished translating the warpzone maps. In addition to that I translated the blue lagoon and Gaia temple. I still haven't tested my translation very much. That's something I will do rather in the end.
It looks like I reached the middle of the world of light today, so you could say that about 1/4 of the game is translated.

Please excuse my style of writing in this report. I was too lazy to write everything again so I just copied the content of the three progress reports I sent Elder already.

I hope you have fun reading this! ;)

Progress report #2:

  • completed the translation of the desert area
  • also finished Ifrit temple (ifrit and jinn are such chatterboxes )

That's it for today.

Progress report #3:

  • Made some huge progress today as you can see in the overview. Almost half of the translation is finished! :D
  • Acted like an idiot when I was translating the temple of claimants. I wanted to look up the english dialogue again so I opened a second RPG-Maker with the english version of EE, but then I got confused and suddenly I thought that I didn't save my translation of the dialogue so I started right over until I noticed that I was working in the wrong window... So in the end I had two translations of one dialogue... happy me.
  • I liked to translate the star tropics very much, because for a change it had nearly no dialogues, just some chests and the end cut-scene! :D
  • Places like the endzone (without the secret room) and mt. orisia were very pleasent to translate, too.

I'm really satisfied with my progress so far. Now the world of shadow can come!

Progress report #4:

  • Needed some time off from my projects for university, so translating was my way to relax!
  • Completed the translation of the fan room. Unexpectedly this one was really hard to translate because I had to change it here and there a bit to make it sound more german without distorting the message.
  • To justify this new entry I couldn't just stop after that, so I also translated two dungeons (Onyx Cave and Mt. Zachariah) and the houses (incl. the princess' home) of the dark world.

Time to make some progress in my other projects as well...

Progress report #5:

  • Finally some progress!!!
  • I must admit that I hated to translate Rishi's Domain, because he allways speaks like this:
    "I A-M T-H-E E-V-I-L U-B-E-R-D-E-M-O-N! N-O-T-H-I-N-G C-A-N S-T-O-P M-E! W-A-H-A-H-A-H-A-H-A!!!" And that really takes time to translate. But I'm glad that I finished this.
  • To translate some nice things, too, I had to continue with the dungeons. It was really nice that the maps with dialogues were marked (a feature that Elder didn't use in the whole project, though :P ).

I will translate more in the next days because I don't have so many projects at once anymore. :D

Hey Kinta, are you translating the current or the next version? (Not that I can read German, mind you, but I'm just wondering  )

I'm translating the current version but Elder assured me that it won't be the problem to update this version.

Congrats on your progress Kinta! Looks like it's coming along pretty nicely. There are many jobs around the world that could use skills like that (translation). Many in the game industry. If you keep polishing your skills you could be doing it professionally :P. And with an amazing game like Eternal Eden on your resume/cv it's sure to help :P.

Soon it won't matter if the red is done or the green, because the list is equally long no matter how you look at it.

That's not really what I'm intending to do but if I don't get a job in the games industry I might change my plans. :D

New progress report has been added!

Wonderful Kinta!

It's great to know that we'll be able to experiment the localization process for the first time :D I wonder how many copies we'll sell in your region :)

I figured it wasn't. Just saying for the future, it's something you might want to look into if you don't mind doing it and are good at it :P.

And you know how to persuade every single one of them to buy the german version of EE, right? :D

Well, the current convertion ratio for Eternal Eden is 12%. If his audience is similar to the one here and that the exposure is good, we can expect approx 12% from everyone downloading the game.

Added a new entry and changed the overview to make it clearer what's still to do and what has been done.

Oh, thanks for reminding! The database including all the item names and descriptions is finished as well! 8-)
But the battle script still needs to be translated.

I'll get a second copy just to brush up on my German. =D
Hedgehogs are great. They are small and cute, but some of them are also able game designers. Check out these insane ramblings about their most recent project, Terra Lingua.
